Shaun’s Story

Shaun’s Story

From YMCA Exeter resident to staff member, Shaun’s story of coming to faith and growing into a role supporting residents is profound.

Throughout his college years, Shaun’s home life became more difficult.

“I was living at home during my first year of college. But it was not a nice place to live,” explains Shaun, now 20. “I struggled to sleep at night because of all the yelling.”

Shaun travelled to Bicton College every day on the bus. One day he sat next to a girl who started telling him about her faith. He just sat and listened.

“At the same time, my home life was really tough,” explains Shaun. “I was walking past a church one day and picked up a leaflet about praying. So I thought I’d try it.

“I basically prayed and asked God to put this girl into my life.”

God answered Shaun’s initial prayers and then surprised him with more. Through his new girlfriend, Shaun heard about YMCA Exeter and was offered a place to move into Stage 4 housing at Sidwell Studios.

“Living in Sidwell Studios was amazing,” says Shaun. “The quietness was music to my ears. So often at home I went to sleep at night with screaming.

“Through my time at Sidwell’s I was able to go along to the gaming cafe and take part in the boxing sessions. My year at Sidwells was a recovery year. It helped me adjust my mental health. I had the time to complete a Bible in one year – I got so much knowledge in that year.

“My plan before God was to go into the military, but now I feel God calling me to help people instead.”

Today, Shaun is a support worker for residents in YMCA Exeter’s Stage 1 housing.

“I’m learning so many skills about how to talk and support people. I’ve only been in my role for a few months but it’s already great to hear from residents who say I’ve helped them.

“I’m really thankful that I know God’s got a plan for me.”

Praise God for Shaun’s journey to faith and finding peace at Sidwell Studios.
