Youthwork in Broadclyst

Youthwork in Broadclyst

Every Thursday, YMCA Exeter youth workers, Becky and Shannon head to the village of Broadclyst on the outskirts of Exeter, to run a youth club that ranges from school years 7 to 13.

Recently a couple of the young people shared their experience of youth club with the Broadclyst parish council.

12-year-old Jess says:

“I love youth club and I have such an amazing time when I am there. I am always so excited on a Thursday wondering what activities the youth workers have planned for that day.

“Another reason youth club is amazing is because it gets me off my phone and doing fun, engaging activities. Being on my phone can be addictive but if I’m on it too long, it makes me really grumpy and I know it’s not good for my health. Going to youth club helps us make more friends and meet new people. Youth club is really great for developing social skills and characteristics.

“For some children, youth club may be a safe space to tell youth workers things they may not be able to tell other people. Some children may be going through hard times and need a trusted adult to talk to. Becky and Shannon make it very clear they are always here to talk.

“Thank you for listening and thank you Becky and Shannon for making youth club such an enjoyable place to be.”

13-year-old Elysia says:

“I have been in youth club for over a year and it is a highlight of my week. When I’m sitting in class, I can’t wait to get there on a Thursday evening.

“Every time I come to youth club I know that the youth club workers will always help us in a bad situation and if we need help with anything. If anyone at youth club gets hurt, the youth club workers will always come to help.

“Coming to youth club takes my mind off school pressures and I always have loads of fun when I’m there. I’m always laughing with my friends or with the youth workers. If we are worried about anything, Becky and Shannon are very reassuring and when we feel nervous they are always there for us.

“I enjoy trying out all of the activities offered – often things that I wouldn’t get to do anywhere else.”
